March 26-31 2009 - The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) partnered
with The Nathaniel Anthony Ayers Foundation (NAAF) and the Fulton
County Department of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases
to raise awareness about mental illness and homelessness. From March 26-31, 2009, 44 orchestras participated in the national campaign, “Orchestras Feeding America.” During the food drive, NAAF’s Resident Artist, Jerome Lawrence, displayed his art at the Woodruff Arts Center.

March 22, 2009 - 60 Minutes dedicated a segment to the film, “The
Soloist.” The piece featured interviews with Nathaniel Anthony
Ayers, his sister, Jennifer Ayers-Moore, and journalist Steve Lopez. The film, starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr., is about the unique relationship between Nathaniel and Steve Lopez, the Los Angeles Times reporter who wrote the book, “The Soloist.” See the whole interview and an interview with Jennifer called “A Foundation for Hope” on the CBSNews website.

Education


The Foundation is committed to raising public awareness about mental illness and the transformative power of art.
Foundation Lectureships at universities in Los Angeles, Cleveland and Atlanta.

The Foundation will produce concerts and exhibitions showcasing art produced by the mentally ill.

Advocacy

The Nathaniel Anthony Ayers Foundation serves a voice for people affected by mental illness. Through our website, we collect, document and share the experiences and journeys of individuals and families impacted by mental illness.

The foundation also advocates on behalf of public policy initiatives that ensure parity in health care coverage for the mental ill; increase funding for national issues; improve services in local communities through county funding from the state; and ensure due process for social service.
