The President delivered his remarks discussing how far we have come - and how far we have to go. Invited guests included Cabinet officials, Members of Congress, grassroots leaders and Americans living with disabilities. President Obama commended President George H. W. Bush for signing the original ADA. Following his remarks, President Obama held a signing ceremony where he instituted additional regulations ensuring fair and equal access for disabled Americans.

The event included performances by Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, Patti LaBelle and Marlee Matlin, and remarks by Marca Bristo, President of Access Living, White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council Melody Barnes. Robert David Hall introduced the President. Mr. Ayers looked particularly dapper in all white, all the way to his bolo hat. He impressed the audience by playing both the violin and trumpet. He reminded us again of his determination and courage as he made his musical statement to “Stop the Stigma” and ensure the fair and equal treatment of all Americans.

It discusses the profound power of Music over the power of his mental health challenges.

The Cleveland Cavaliers flew Nathaniel in from LA to be honored at halftime of the nationally televised game against the Orlando Magic, and it was phenomenal. As phenomenal as that he made the trip. It’s been at least 25 years since he flew on an airplane. He walked the red carpet to center court at halftime while the announcer read his bio. At center court, he was presented with a framed Cavs jersey with his name on it.

Nathaniel was very pleased with the ceremony as evidenced by his willing acceptance of the rousing applause and his happily accommodating the many interview requests that followed in the press area.

What a major step for Mr. Ayers. He is already asking when will his next trip take place.

A CD project many years in the making has come to fruition. Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, former Juilliard student, who has battled mental illness and was homeless and playing a two-string violin five years ago, has been joined by several notable musicians and composers to make this recording. A pal of his, Joe Russo, flew in from Connecticut; L.A. Philharmonic pianist Joanne Pearce Martin and violinist Robert Gupta were there. And Michael Balzary, also known as Flea of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers, was eager to join in.
What resulted is a wonderful CD of Mr. Ayers life, exhibiting his belief and faith in the healing power of music. This CD will be available in a couple of weeks and for sale on this website. All the proceeds will benefit programs for the artistically gifted mentally ill and stopping the stigma of mental illness.

I was beginning to think we’d never get around to making the CD that Nathaniel Anthony Ayers has been talking about for years. Last summer, on a trip to San Francisco, where Mr. Ayers was honored for his spirit by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we came up with the perfect name for it: “Putting on Ayers.” (Read the whole LA Times article here)

At the American Music Therapists Association’s (AMTA) annual conference in San Diego this past November 2009, Nathaniel received the organization’s coveted “Songs from the Heart” award for exemplifying the power of music. Nathaniel was humbled by the reception he received by nearly 1,500 attendees who demonstrated great respect for him. In the company of musicians and students, seeking music therapy as a career, Nathaniel played several instruments in impromptu sessions that lasted well into the wee hours of the morning. AMTA intends to play an integral role in NAAF’s artists in residence program and in other initiatives.

Jennifer Ayers-Moore was the keynote speaker and recipient of Bridging the Gaps’ (BTG) 2009 award at its fall Symposium at Drexel University in Philadelphia. BTG is jointly administered by seven academic health centers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Symposium was the culmination of a program for students, interested in pursuing careers as healthcare professionals. The students presented their projects in poster format and facilitated workshops on topics they developed based on the public health problems they dealt with during the program.
Deeply moved by the event, Ayers-Moore asserted, “My experience with the 2009 Bridging the Gaps annual symposium will always have a place in my heart … I was so impressed with all the Poster Displays because along with the displays were serious students who obviously gained valuable knowledge in the seven–week program that without a doubt left a ‘forever imprint’.”
